Case studies
The IAL trials were one of the sources of information for development of guidelines for identification, measurement and remediation of channel seepage. Information from the trials appears throughout this website. Two detailed case studies are also presented and a template is provided as a guide for presentation of further case studies.

Donald Main Channel

The Donald Main Channel in the Wimmera Mallee Water (WMW) supply system has a long history of seepage problems, investigation and seepage trials. Two separate lengths of channel with apparent high seepage rates were investigated to quantify seepage losses, determine the effect of channel seepage on land salinity and identify and evaluate seepage reduction options. The investigation included pondage tests, soil mapping, salinity mapping, EM34, water chemistry analysis and permeameter tests.

Waranga Western Channel

The upgrading of the capacity of the Waranga Western Channel (WWC), an open irrigation channel maintained by Goulburn Murray Water, had the potential to exacerbate existing and create new seepage problems. A seepage investigation program was undertaken to identify the sections of channel that would require lining as part of the works. Geophysical, geological, pondage test data and field inspections were used to determine areas requiring clay lining.

Case study template

We encourage contributions to this website through the submission of case studies documenting channel seepage remediation experience. The case study template provides a uniform structure for water authorities to document their experience. Publication of this will expand the collective knowledge of seepage remediation in Australia.
